French drain

When humidity invades your home, it’s not just an inconvenience; it’s a constant source of worry. Perhaps you’ve already noticed musty odors, stains on your basement walls, or even a general feeling of heaviness in the air. These signs are unmistakable: they point to a humidity problem that’s undermining your comfort and the quality of the air you breathe at home.

And then there’s the fear, the apprehension that the next storm, the next heavy downpour, will turn into a flood in your home. The thought of having to deal with major water damage, losing your belongings, or having to undertake costly repairs is a source of stress that no one wants to experience.

Do you have questions? That’s normal. We answer them here.

How does a French drain work?

A French drain consists of perforated pipes placed at the footing of your home’s foundation. Water seeps into the pipe and is carried by gravity to a disposal point, such as a basin or the municipal storm sewer.

The lifespan of a French drain generally varies between 25 and 40 years, depending on the materials used and the quality of the soil. Clogging by silt or roots can reduce its lifespan.

A French drain does not require regular maintenance if the filtration system is adequate, but it is important to inspect the drainage outlets to ensure they are not clogged. In some cases, hydro-jetting may be necessary.
