Redesigning a space for the couple: Renovating a house in Outremont
A home reinvented
Our clients, long-time homeowners in the Outremont borough, saw their daily lives change when their children left home. Certain rooms, now unoccupied or too compartmentalized, no longer met their needs. They therefore wanted to transform their space to adapt it to this new chapter, while preserving the unique character and elegance of their home.
Details of the project
The issue
The goal of this renovation was to transform the space to meet the couple’s needs while preserving the home’s unique charm. One challenge was to create a dialogue between the old and the new by incorporating modern woodwork that blends perfectly with the existing woodwork.
To bring their vision to life, we expanded the living area. Structural modifications and the removal of a load-bearing wall opened up the space and allowed for the integration of an XXL kitchen and a reading corner.
This project was an opportunity to give these parents the functional and warm space they had long dreamed of, a place that combines the charm of Outremont homes with today’s comfort and brightness.
The need
Since the dining room was underused after the children left home, this couple seized the opportunity to expand their kitchen and create an inviting reading corner. The main challenge was to modernize this space while respecting its character and original woodwork. Our approach successfully met this challenge, offering a contemporary design that elegantly blends in with the existing style.
The concept
Our concept was based on a few key principles:
- Open up the dining room by replacing the load-bearing wall with a beam and steel columns.
- Keep as many original features as possible, such as woodwork, beams, and floors, to preserve the character of the space.
- Enlarge windows and optimize insulation to create a bright and healthy environment.
- Modernize the kitchen and improve its functionality
Notes on the kitchen
Bathed in natural light, the modern kitchen opens generously onto the dining area. This fluid design allows our clients to entertain their guests with ease, while enjoying their dining room to the fullest on a daily basis.
