Are wood-burning fireplaces still allowed in Montreal?
Yes, it is permitted, but on one condition: your appliance must be high-performance and certified. Since October 2018, the City of Montreal has required that all wood-burning stoves and fireplaces emit no more than 2.5 g/h of fine particles into the atmosphere. If your appliance does not meet this standard, its use is prohibited, except in the event of a major power outage (lasting more than three hours).
Why have regulations for shelters become so strict in Montreal?
It is primarily a matter of public health and the environment. Residential wood heating is one of the main causes of winter smog in Montreal. The fine particles emitted by old fireplaces are classified as carcinogenic by the WHO. By regulating their use, we improve air quality for the entire neighborhood.
