New beginning, new home: Transforming a duplex into a single-family home
The conversion of a duplex into a single-family home to meet new needs
On the Plateau Mont-Royal, we transformed this duplex into a single-family home, custom-designed to meet the family’s new needs. After a separation, our client purchased the duplex next door to the family home. Her goal was clear: to stay as close as possible to her teenage children.

The issue
This original building required major renovation to make it not only livable, but also suitable for this new stage of life. We therefore undertook this transformation of the duplex into a single-family home by completely renovating the entire duplex, including the kitchen, bathrooms, and living room.
The need
The goal was to transform this space into a place that perfectly meets the family’s daily needs. It was necessary to maximize storage space in the kitchen and turn this formerly partitioned building into a true haven of light. But first and foremost, it was crucial to make the building livable and functional.
The concept
Our concept was based on a few key principles:
- Combine the back room of the house with the adjacent kitchen to maximize space.
- Enlarge the window of the new living room to take advantage of the west-facing orientation of the courtyard.
- Choose materials that bring lightness and liveliness to different living areas.
- Add windows to create a bright environment
