Ideas to optimize your small kitchen

When our interior designers meet with our clients and analyze their needs, they are often asked to “do more with less.” This is part of our challenge. We must optimize space and maximize the return on our clients’ investment.

The challenge of creativity in a small kitchen

We must therefore maximize the functionality of each room and respect our clients’ budgets, while optimizing their investment. It’s a wonderful challenge. Our designers will tell you: they’re most motivated when their creativity is put to the test. Here, we present a design concept that we incorporated into one of our kitchen renovations.

Pantry under the stairs for a small kitchen

In a kitchen where space is at a premium, we came up with a clever idea: recessing the pantry under the stairs leading upstairs. This wasted space was transformed into an asset, providing the homeowners with a functional pantry without encroaching on the rest of the kitchen cabinetry. It’s a perfect solution for combining functionality and creativity in a small space.

The storage wall: an essential asset for a small kitchen
In a small kitchen, every inch counts. That’s why we often take advantage of walls to create clever storage solutions. You can install open shelves to keep everything close at hand, or pegboards to hang utensils and pots and pans. It’s a way to free up counter space while still having quick access to what we use most. It maximizes space without making the room feel cluttered.

The central island, a multifunctional trump card
Even in a small kitchen, a central island can be an asset if you think it through. Rather than a massive work surface, it’s best designed as a multifunctional element. It can serve as an additional work surface, a dining area for two, and, most importantly, it can conceal drawers and shelves. It’s often equipped with casters for easy mobility, offering unparalleled flexibility. It’s ideal for creating a focal point and optimizing space.

Light, an ally for creating the illusion of space in a small kitchen
To visually enlarge a small space, light is our best ally. Use it to play with perspectives. Opt for recessed lighting for uniform and discreet lighting. Also install LED strips under cabinets to illuminate countertops, and use light finishes and mirrors. These choices create a feeling of space and depth, making the kitchen appear larger and more airy than it actually is.
