Any change in time should result in a change of smoke detector batteries.
Smoke detectors are essential for our safety and operate 24 hours a day. That’s why we must ensure they’re always working.
How to Check Your Smoke Detector
To ensure your detector is working, here’s what you’ll do and check:
Press the detector button for a few seconds. If you hear a long beep, it’s working.
If the beep is intermittent, the battery needs to be replaced immediately. If the battery is leaking, the entire alarm must be replaced, as the terminals may be corroded.
Test it with a match or a candle to make sure it triggers when needed.
If the detector is connected to a central station, make sure the signal has been transmitted.
Do not use rechargeable batteries.
Install one detector per floor, 10 to 30 cm from the wall.
It should be replaced every 10 years.
Safety Tips
Make sure you always have spare batteries on hand. If needed, you’ll be ready to act. It’s a simple gesture that makes all the difference.

Smoke Detector Regulations
Since October 1, 2018, the Quebec Electrical Code has made it mandatory to install an electric smoke detector in every bedroom or room that could be used as a bedroom. One must also be installed in every common area.
It’s important to note that smoke detectors no longer operate on batteries. They are connected to the alarm system.
Other Detectors to Check
Along with smoke detectors, carbon monoxide and gas detectors should also be checked. Home safety is paramount!
