Key steps for kitchen renovation

The kitchen is a central part of the home, where we spend a lot of time, whether preparing meals or spending time with family. It’s therefore crucial to carefully consider the layout of this space. We’ll guide you through the standard measures for designing a kitchen that’s both ergonomic and renovated. Here’s a summary of the main elements to consider when planning your kitchen renovation.

Standard kitchen measurements to follow

Workstations: Heights and Clearances

Workstations are central to kitchen ergonomics. These include islands, counters, and cabinets. The standard height for these surfaces is 36 inches (from the floor, including the counter), but it can be adjusted to suit your height for greater comfort.

For islands, the height of the breakfast bar can vary. If you want a bar, plan for a height of 42 inches. For a more convivial dining area, at the same height as a table, opt for a height of 30 inches. Chair seats should be chosen based on the counter height, allowing 12 inches of clearance between the seat and the countertop.

Upper Cabinets and Clearance Distances

The distance between counters and upper cabinets is crucial for good circulation and a clear work surface. Cabinet Clearance: The standard distance between the counter and upper cabinets is 18 inches. If space permits, this can be increased to 24 inches for a more spacious work surface. However, this choice may reduce storage space.

Circulation: For smooth circulation between the cabinets and the island, a distance of 48 inches is ideal. It allows two people to work without hindering each other and to easily open the dishwasher doors. If 48 inches of clearance is not possible, this distance can be reduced to a minimum of 36 inches, while maintaining a functional kitchen.

Proper Appliance Planning

To design a functional kitchen, it is essential to choose all the appliances before starting to plan the cabinets. Their dimensions vary considerably from one model to another.

Dishwasher and sink: A 24-inch wide cabinet is recommended for the dishwasher. For a single sink, a 24-inch cabinet is sufficient, while a double sink requires a cabinet of at least 33 inches.

Stove and range hood: It is important to choose a range hood that is the same width as the range. Clearances between the range hood and the range depend on the model: 30 inches for an electric appliance and 36 inches for a gas model. To ensure you make the right choice, always consult the manufacturer’s installation manual.

Refrigerator: Refrigerators generally vary in width from 30 to 36 inches. Their depth also varies, making it easy to find a model that fits perfectly into the kitchen layout.
